In a part of the world where large format department stores are a rare entity, RTKL, the wholly-owned subsidiary of ARCADIS, was commissioned to design a retail center that would adapt to local conditions and embrace regional culture. Multiplaza Pacific, a 48,000-SM retail center, was created with an innovative design that embraces and enhances Panama City’s economic and cultural resources.
Unlike the typical American model, which features dumbbell-shaped corridors anchored on either end by large department stores, the two-level Multiplaza Pacific is configured in a unique pinwheel format. To extend success of the center, the client asked RTKL to provide planning and design services for a 13,400-SM expansion. The expansion, which continues the system of “streets” and “plazas”, underlines Multiplaza’s urban character and comprises one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of luxury retailers in a single destination. An outdoor covered terrace with lounge seating, bars and fine restaurants extends shoppers’ visits into the evening and has quickly become one of the more popular attractions. Plans for a third expansion are in the works and will reinforce Multiplaza Pacific’s status as Latin America’s premier mixed-use commercial establishment.
